Shoes

Hello! (Hello!) How’d you do? (How’d you do?)

Welcome to a musical celebration of journeys, seasons, dreams and new beginnings. Shoes, my new CD, is a song-and-story exploration of the cycles of life — from baby's first shoes right up through the grandma knitting booties! I've included games you can play with your family, strategies you can use when conflicts arise, not to mention countless moments inspired by my own children. These days, it’s so important to discover the common threads.

3. Ecchoing Green

Ecchoing Green

The sun does arise;
And make happy the skies.
The merry bells ring
To welcome the Spring;
The skylark and thrush,
The birds of the bush,
Sing louder around
To the bells’ cheerful sound,
While our sports shall be seen
On the Ecchoing Green
(our sports shall be seen
On the Ecchoing Green)

Old John, with white hair,
Does laugh away care,
Sitting under the oak,
Among the old folk.
They laugh at our play,
And soon they all say:
“Such, such were the joys
When we all, girls and boys,
In our youth time were seen
On the Ecchoing Green
(In our youth time were seen
On the Ecchoing Green)

Till the little ones, weary,
No more can be merry;
The sun does descend,
And our sports have an end.
Round the laps of their mothers
Many sisters and brothers,
Like birds in their nest,
Are ready for rest,
And sport no more seen
On the Darkening Green
(And sport no more seen
On the Darkening Green)

4. Let's Start Over

Let's Start Over

There was one cookie left, sitting on the plate
We both grabbed for it, my brother was too late
I was just about to eat it when he screamed “wait!”
He said “I licked it”

Oh, you’re so gross, that’s so bad
You know you’re the meanest brother that I have ever had
He called me a baby head, which really made me mad
But just then, my mother came in.

She said, “Again you two? Can you try to work it out?”
“Not me, there’s no doubt…”
I worked up my best face, a sigh and then a pout
My brother, he just made weird faces.

She said “You two, try holding hands”…. so we did
“Look at each other” … oh I hate this part
Because, well…we always start laughing
She said “Say…

chorus
Let’s start over, you and me
Let’s start over, we disagree
Let’s start over, you and me
and build our friendship again

My friend came over to play for the day
She said “Like my new shirt?” … and well, what could I say?
It was purple stripes and orange dots, the sleeves were black and grey and
So I said…. “I think it’s ugly”

She asked me if I liked it, and now she’s in a snit
She says she doesn’t like me, not one bit
I don’t know how I got here, I’m going to have a fit
But just then my dad came in

He said “Girls, try holding hands”…. so we did
“Look at each other” well as sure as that sun rises in the morning
We were laughing in no time
He said “Say…

chorus

We were playing on the playground, yesterday at school
Taking turns on the swing, one at a time, that’s the rule
My friends started fighting which really wasn’t cool and
For once, I was just watching

Alice said “it’s my turn”, Rachel said “uh-ah”
Your turn was longer and then Alice said “uh-ah”
“uh-ah uh-ah, uh-ah ”
And that’s when I had an idea

I said “Hey guys, try holding hands”…. so they did
“Look at each other” … well in no time they were
Laughing and giggling
I said “Say…

chorus

So if you’re ever having trouble just trying to get along
And things seem rather hopeless and just keep going wrong
Maybe you’ll remember and sing this little song
And things will start to turn around

7. Lone Pumpkin

Lone Pumpkin

Oh a lonely pumpkin grew on a green pumpkin vine
He was fat, he was round, he was mellow
“No silly jack-o-lantern will I make,” said he
“I’m determined for to be a useful fellow”

Oh the glory of the jack is in the candle
As he grins down from the gatepost set on high
And the glory of the turkey is the drumstick
But the glory of the pumpkin is the pie

Well he held his head up high as the cook came around
He was chosen at once for the winner
And his fondest wish came true, he was proud pumpkin pie
And the glory of the great Thanksgiving dinner

Oh the glory of the jack is in the candle
As he grins down from the gatepost set on high
And the glory of the turkey is the drumstick
But the glory of the pumpkin is the pie

Traditional song

8. Harvest

Harvest

Leaves are falling, new buds are forming
Squirrels are gathering as the geese fly south across the skyline
Cool breezes hinting, pumpkins are ripening
Families gathering as the children pick apples for the pie

chorus
We welcome the fall as the earth tilts and spins
The North Wind, she calls, the harvest is in

Jackets are snapping, blankets are wrapping
Daylight is fading as the Harvest Moon waxes and wanes
Wood is stacking, bonfires are crackling
The soccer fields are filling as we all join together for the game

chorus

School sneakers squeaking, old friends are greeting
New friends are reaching as the school bus comes rumbling down the road
Summer dreams are fading, the farmers are haying
A new year’s beginning and we’re so much older than before

chorus

9. Shoes

Shoes

A baby was born just the other day
Grandma knit booties when she came to stay
“Isn’t she cute? Just look at that nose,
Let’s count them up, ten little toes”

“But, the booties I made, they’re already too small”
“No they’re not Grandma, she’s just getting tall!”
Changing, growing everyday, we’re getting bigger in every way
There’s so much more that we can do, not to mention, our shoes are new

That baby started walking and running round the yard
Chasing the cat and the St. Bernard
Those shoes kept her steady and mostly upright
But, they were starting to feel a little tight

“Mama… small”
“No they’re not dear, you’re just getting tall!”
Changing, growing everyday, we’re getting bigger in every way
There’s so much more that we can do, not to mention, our shoes are new

Then there was the birthday she got the big bike
It was sleeker, faster, had a horn and a light
“Use your brakes,” but she dragged her feet
She stopped, sneakers smoking, and said “that was neat”

“But I think I wrecked my shoes, ah, it’s OK, they’re too small”
“No they’re not, you’re just getting tall!”
Changing, growing everyday, we’re getting bigger in every way
There’s so much more that we can do, not to mention, our shoes are new

Well that girl was getting bigger and busier by the day
Homework, drama club, sports, ballet
A school semi-formal, new gown and high heels
And a boy in a tux, holding flowers, named Neil

Dad caught his breath “Honey, you look beautiful. You used to be so small”
“Dad, I’m just growing up, that’s all!”
Changing, growing everyday, we’re getting bigger in every way
There’s so much more that we can do, not to mention, our shoes are new

Well Neil hung around, best friends for years
They got married, bought a house, both busy with careers
Now they have a little girl of their very own
And grandmas knitting booties and she’s bringing them around

Changing, growing everyday, we’re getting bigger in every way
There’s so much more that we can do, not to mention, our shoes are new
Changing, growing everyday, we’re getting bigger in every way
There’s so much more that we can do, not to mention, our shoes are new

Family Tree

Family Tree flowing through me
We drink from the waters of time
We take heart through the seasons, bear fruit then we rest
Knowing our lives entwine

Drink, drink, drink the sunshine
And feel the rain
The earth provides we have friends by our side
As we circle round again

13. City Snow

City Snow

It fell in the city, it fell through the night
Grey sidewalks, all turned white

It fell in the city, it fell through the night
Red stop signs, all turned white

Snow is falling down from the sky
We’ll roll it, and pack it, and stack it up high

It fell in the city, it fell through the night
Blue police cars, all turned white

It fell in the city, it fell through the night
Yellow street lights, all turned white

Snow is falling down from the sky
We’ll roll it, and pack it, and stack it up high

It fell in the city, it fell through the night
Brown telephone poles, all turned white

It fell in the city, it fell through the night
Gold domes, all turned white

Snow is falling down from the sky
We’ll roll it, and pack it, and stack it up high

Swirling, twirling, snow is everywhere
Swirling, twirling, it’s a magical time of the year

It fell in the city, it fell through the night
Green garbage trucks, all turned white

It fell in the city, it fell through the night
Orange traffic cones, all turned white

Snow is falling down from the sky
We’ll roll it, and pack it, and stack it up high

Snow is falling down from the sky
We’ll roll it, and pack it, and stack it up high
